Generative engine optimisation

What is GEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means improving your website, content and wider business information so generative search systems can understand your organisation and consider it as a relevant source or provider in an answer. At Klusio, we usually call the outcome AI visibility.

The meaning behind the three letters

Generative systems assemble an answer rather than only listing web pages. A business may be named in that answer, described as a possible provider or cited through a link. Those are distinct observations, and none guarantees a visit or enquiry.

Generative
Systems that generate an answer using information available to them.
Engine
Experiences such as ChatGPT Search, Google’s AI search features, Gemini and Perplexity. Their information sources and behaviour differ.
Optimisation
Making your business and useful content easier to understand, check and find. It is not control over the answer a system produces.

Look at what was actually measured

An AI mention is not the same thing as an ordinary Google click. The public Choice case includes 9,850 impressions in its exported Google generative-AI report, covering three months and exported on 1 September 2026. The exact report and its scope are shown in the case.

De Glasdokters’ case separately records 527 AI impressions for its leading page, captured on 8 September 2026. These figures do not count ChatGPT recommendations or enquiries. Keep the source, date, page scope and definition with each number.

From a short keyword to a customer’s actual question

A longer question can include the service, location, problem and an important condition. Your page should help someone assess whether you are a suitable provider. These are illustrative examples, not measured search volumes.

How GEO relates to SEO

SEO focuses on organic visibility in search engines. GEO focuses on visibility in generated answers. Both depend on useful information and a website that can be accessed and understood. Treating them as opposing choices misses that shared foundation.

Google says the normal SEO foundations remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as a supporting link; eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Its guidance does not require a special AI file or special schema.

Shared foundations, different observations
ApproachMain focusWhat to inspect
SEOVisibility in organic search resultsCrawlability, indexing, useful pages, internal links and measured impressions or clicks.
GEOPresence in generated AI answersRelevant customer questions, how the company is described, visible source links and repeated observations.

Six practical foundations

These checks improve the information available to customers and search systems. They are not a published ranking formula or a guarantee that an assistant will choose your company.

1. Make the business clear
Explain who you are, what you offer, where you operate and who you help. For example: Klusio is a Dutch platform that supports SEO work, AI visibility measurement, content and enquiry follow-up for small and medium-sized businesses.
2. Answer real questions
Explain costs, materials, problems and alternatives using your expertise. A roofing article might distinguish damaged roofing material, blocked drainage and a damaged roof penetration, while making clear that the actual cause needs assessment.
3. Describe your local relevance
Connect your genuine working area with the services you provide. Keep the Business Profile and contact information current, and use local projects where they add something.
4. Add evidence
Use real cases, project photographs, dated reviews and verifiable credentials. When citing results, include the source, measurement period and what the figure actually counts.
5. Use structured data where appropriate
Organisation, local-business and article information can help describe a page. Markup must match visible content and satisfy the relevant guidelines; it does not ensure an AI mention.
6. Build genuine external references
Relevant industry directories, partner pages, customer cases and independent coverage can provide context about your business. Check accuracy and relevance rather than buying empty mentions.

GEO, AEO and AI SEO: related terms, different emphasis

These labels are used inconsistently. Agree what will actually be researched, changed and measured rather than buying an acronym.

A practical reading of common terms
TermExpanded formTypical emphasis
GEOGenerative engine optimisationA business or website’s visibility in generated AI answers.
AEOAnswer engine optimisationContent that directly answers a question and can be understood in context.
AI SEOAI-assisted search engine optimisationUsing AI for research, writing, optimisation or monitoring; the term is also sometimes used for AI search visibility.

What to avoid

Write for the person who needs the information. A page that is misleading or adds little value does not become useful because it is labelled GEO.

Mass-produced pages
Do not create hundreds of generic pages or repeat one text with a different town name.
Fabricated proof
Never invent reviews, references, credentials or customer results.
Search manipulation
Avoid keyword stuffing, hidden text and misleading structured data.
Promises of control
Do not claim that you can manipulate ChatGPT or guarantee a permanent recommendation.
Content with no reader benefit
A source, external mention or new page should help someone understand the subject, not exist only to influence an AI system.

How Klusio puts the work into a recurring process

Klusio connects research with work on your own site. The scope, measurement frequency and execution rhythm depend on your plan and settings. A new article is not always the right next action.

1. Inspect the website
Check whether the business, services, audience and working area are clear.
2. Research relevant questions
Investigate which customer questions matter and what your existing pages already cover.
3. Record AI answers
Check selected questions for company mentions, descriptions and sources, keeping the platform and date.
4. Compare the available competitor evidence
Review the pages and descriptions associated with other companies without assuming they caused the answer.
5. Prepare useful content
Develop service explanations, comparisons, practical answers and evidence. Improve an existing page where it already fits.
6. Follow distinct measurements
Keep Google impressions and clicks, tracked AI mentions and actual enquiries separate.
7. Reassess the next priority
Review changed information and subsequent measurements, then decide what deserves work.

Example: a roofing business

Start with questions about the work you actually provide. An existing service page may answer several related questions; the examples below are not an instruction to create a separate page for every phrase.

Questions to research
Who repairs roof leaks in Almere? What affects the cost of a leak repair? What should a customer do after storm damage? How do EPDM and bitumen compare? Is emergency attendance available?
Services and explanations
Connect roof leaks, flat-roof repairs, bitumen, EPDM, storm damage, renovation and chimney leaks where they form part of your offer.
Information needed to choose
State the real working area, contact route and emergency arrangements. Use genuine projects and reviews. Never invent round-the-clock availability.

Example: a facade-cleaning business

A customer may need help distinguishing surface dirt from a moisture problem or deciding what should be assessed before treatment. Use your own method and expertise to explain the limits.

Questions to research
Which facade cleaner works in my area? What affects the price? Should a facade be cleaned or treated? How is graffiti removed from brick? Who assesses damp problems?
Services and methods
Explain cleaning, water-repellent treatments, renovation, graffiti removal, soft washing and steam cleaning only where you offer them.
Practical evidence
Show suitable before-and-after photographs, the surface and its condition, the chosen method, costs or cost factors, and your working area.

A complete GEO readiness checklist

A missing item is a reason to investigate, not automatically an instruction to create more content. Add only what fits the real business and helps the reader.

Questions to review with your team or developer
AreaChecks
Business informationWho are you? What do you do? Where do you work? Who do you help? Are contact details visible?
Services and contentAre the main services explained? Are real questions answered? Are comparisons, local information and FAQs included where useful?
EvidenceAre genuine reviews, cases, results, project photographs and customer stories available and traceable?
Technical accessCan important pages be indexed? Is the sitemap accurate? Is Search Console connected? Does the site work on mobile? Is the important text available in the page?
Structured dataAre the relevant Organisation, LocalBusiness or Article details accurate? Does any FAQ markup describe visible questions? Does every marked-up claim match the content and applicable guidance?
AI visibilityDo you repeat relevant prompts? Is the company named? Which competitors appear? Is the description correct? Can you compare a consistent set over time?

Use the assessment to choose useful work

If the checklist reveals gaps, begin with your most important service and customer questions. Klusio can assess the available website and search information and identify up to three suitable opportunities, with their evidence and scope.

You remain the owner of content published on your website. Ongoing execution, support and cancellation depend on the selected plan and monthly or annual agreement. Ask about the connection and approval process before choosing automatic publication.

Questions and answers

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation means working on your website, content and wider business information so generative search systems can understand the organisation and consider it as a relevant source or provider. It does not give you control over their answers.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

They overlap substantially, but describe different observations. SEO concerns organic search visibility; GEO concerns presence in generated answers. Google says the established SEO foundations remain relevant to its AI search features.

Is SEO still needed when people use AI?

Accessible pages, relevant content, internal links and accurate business information remain useful foundations. Search-enabled assistants can use web sources, so a site that cannot be found or understood creates an avoidable obstacle.

Can Klusio guarantee a ChatGPT mention?

No. Klusio can measure selected questions, investigate competitors and help improve relevant information. No provider can promise that every user will receive an answer naming your business.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

GEO generally refers to visibility in generated answers. AEO emphasises answering questions clearly. The terms overlap and are used differently; agree the practical work and measurement rather than relying on the label.

Do I need special files for GEO?

Google’s guidance does not require a new AI text file or special machine-readable format for its AI search features. Check the requirements of each platform and keep the website’s ordinary technical foundations sound.

Does structured data help?

It can describe the information on a page in a structured form. Use the relevant type and follow its guidelines. It must match the visible content and does not guarantee an AI citation or a special search display.

Is AI-written content bad for GEO?

The tool alone does not establish quality. Check usefulness, accuracy, evidence, original business knowledge and relevance. Generic or misleading text is not made valuable by being produced efficiently.

Is GEO relevant to local businesses?

Local customer questions can include a service and a place. Explain where you actually work, provide useful service information and use real local evidence. Investigate the questions that fit your business rather than copying the same page for every town.

How do you measure GEO?

Repeat a fixed set of relevant questions, save the answers and inspect company mentions, descriptions, competitors and source links. Keep platform and date with each observation. Google performance and actual website enquiries are separate measures.
